What Noble Cause?

by Frank Paynter on March 17, 2006

What noble causeCompels us nowTo send our childrenOff to war?

What cause condonesThis sea of bloodSpilled carelesslyOn foreign sands?

How is our freedom thus secured? When children’s’ battered bodies lieIn shallow craters filled with bloodWhen “shock and awe” obscures the truthOf martyred children sacrificed for oilUpon an altarOf deceitAnd policies thatBy conceitAre justified to tell the worldThat what we do is for some greater good.

How many mothers’ children lost? How many children’s mothers killed? Before we will speak out to sayNot in our nameThis evil doneTo innocents and foe alikeThese misbegotten acts of warAgainst our own best values standAs blots upon our country’s soul.
