Last week we were all happy about Drew Gilpin Faust’s appointment as President of Harvard. A child of privilege, for sure, I thought, but at least they’ve picked a woman. Turns out she’s an old school-mate of Betsy’s. Reading that list of Concord Academy students, you might almost think there were a lot of fortunate young ladies there… names like Olmsted, Wherry, Ewing, Bingham, Bradford, Packard… goodness gracious.

Hi Frank–not sure where the Irish immigrant Devines fit onto that list–and I was there years before Caroline Kennedy got there–CA was a funky place where smart kids and even Democrats could stick it out.

Hey, what’s a meritocracy for if it doesn’t reward merit? I’m just saying, Ms. Gilpin was sort of from that horsey Virginia social set, and I’ll not speculate which branch of the Olmsted’s were represented, or if Ms. Packard was from the auto company, the computer guys or the famous Edina, MN water entrepreneuring branch of the family, I’m just saying… children of privilege is children of privilege. Not all of them know what to do with a first class education, and some of them are privileged to be there because their parents actually sacrifice to make it happen. Didn’t mean to sound TOO snotty.
