Are you a cynic when it comes to university research and the study of control? I am, and B.J. Fogg’s value free approach to perceptual manipulation annoys the hell out of me. On the other hand, he’s undoubtedly on to something.

You’ll see I’m quite concerned about the pitfalls of persuasive tech. My lab spends about 30% of our time on the morals/ethics of this space, and we are planning to launch a new center to highlight the ethical issues in persuasive technology.

What we’re talking about here is machines created to control humans. That’s pretty creepy. And it’s becoming a reality.
