Turtle Power!

Bruce shares the following:

When the primordial buddha Vairochana vowed to emanate throughout the universe as the princely and ever-youthful, bodhisattva of Wisdom, his purpose was to lead beings in an inquiry whereby they could discover the true nature of reality. For that reason, he is usually depicted displaying the two tools essential to that investigation: in his right hand he wields the double-edged sword of logic or analytic discrimination and in his left, the Prajnaparamita Sutra, the text of the teaching on Emptiness. This teaching is fundamental to all forms of Buddhism and for that reason it is often called “Mother of All Buddhas.” It is cushioned on the lotus of Compassion.

Manjushri’s sword of discriminating wisdom is tipped with flames to show that it severs all notions of duality. It can cut away delusion, aversion and longing, to reveal understanding, equanimity and compassion.

Dad’s on the Mend

he had his gall bladder removed tonight and they’ll release him from the hospital tomorrow. He was totally loopy and fun tonight, quite coherent but obviuously loaded on some very good medication. There was a period when he thought we were in a plastics fabrications plant, but it didn’t take much convincing to re-orient him to the hotel room. The plastics thing is from far out of left field… I’ll have to quiz him on the roots of that one when he’s back to normal.

Thanks to everyone who shared their good wishes with us. Dad is an amazing man, funny, articulate, charming, and an alpha male all the way. I’m glad he’s decided to stay around for a while. Eighty is just the beginning of what I hope will be a long and happy old age for him. We need more elders of his quality… but don’t tell him I said so.

Limbic Resonance

Blogging - more than a ride on the technocycle - blogging, a magic carpet, a woven ride parked at the door opening onto today’s media. And each day, if we can learn one thing… then blogging provides an opening. Blogging is the door. Today’s lesson: limbic resonance… with a nod to one who seems to know

…This ability to feel the feelings of others and to project our own is called limbic resonance. It has particular importance for babies. When babies are born, their brains are only partly grown. Because women’s hips have not kept pace with the increasing size of our brains through evolutionary history, much of the growth of the neocortex—where we reason and speak—takes place after we are born. A baby’s limbic system must resonate with the mother’s for its brain to grow properly. In extreme situations where there is little contact, the brain grows only partially, and will never be healthy.

The resonance between the mother’s and baby’s limbic systems begins in the womb and continues to deepen after birth. Every baby imprints on its mother like it will on no one else. Its limbic system is hungry for resonance. Beyond guaranteeing physical brain growth, the baby’s brain learns its basic emotional expression by tuning to the mother. We feel what our mother feels. If we are fortunate to have a loving mother, we are set for life.

The most confusing thing to a baby’s brain is indifference. Researchers say that the mother who hates her baby sends the clear signal the baby’s brain needs to grow and differentiate. The hated child will have problems the loved child will not, but will be better off than the child treated with indifference….

Our need for limbic resonance never stops. As we grow older, we remain an open system. Our limbic system retains the need for contact. It is our dog brain that makes us fall in love. Resonance continues to change us. Who we love has a lot to do with who we become. Our significant emotional relationships change our brains, our feelings, and perhaps at the edges, our dispositions….

…We can choose to change. Maybe we get angry inappropriately. Maybe we fall in love with the wrong people. What we can do, argues Paul Ekman, is learn to become aware of our emotional triggers more quickly. With application, we can gain in awareness so that our emotions are not making decisions that harm us and foreclosing ones that would benefit us. Interestingly, emotion researchers are coming around to saying that ancient meditative awareness practice is a skilful way to reeducate ourselves emotionally.

Another thing to know, as Lewis, Amini and Lannon point out, is that Freudian talk therapy has no value in itself. We can’t talk our way to happiness. When psychotherapy works it is because love is present. It doesn’t matter what sort of therapy your therapist professes. What cures is a loving connection. If you go into resonance with someone who can give you the emotional cues you may not have had in earlier stages in life, you can learn from the resonance. Good teachers, good therapists, good friends and good lovers all offer a succoring resonance.

We are open systems throughout our lives. That’s what makes life worth living.

Mary Matalin and the Social Justice Center

Odd juxtaposition of events in our family tonight.

Beth went to the Wisconsin Women in Government dinner to hear Mary Matalin make an ass of herself defaming muslims. Beth of course simply shared some impressions when she got home. Any wicked spin you might perceive here is all mine….

The anorexic max-botoxed Republican freak strategist led off with an anecdote about someone who approached her just before the event who said he or she was attending just to see if Mary was as much of a bitch in real life as she is on TV. I gather nothing was said during the keynote that would have contradicted this. Matalin comes from Chicago, but now she carries the alien aura of an inside the beltway Bush flying monkey freakazoid, a banished servant of the Crawford Crusader… only room for one set of outsized ears in that White house. Weirdness triumphed. People were as polite as they could be for ten or twenty minutes of the embarassingly long and dismal speech, but in the end this is not really a town that you would expect an inside-the-beltway republidroid like Matalin - especially someone as rancorous and obnoxious as Matalin - to find congenial.

While Beth’s attention wandered from Carville’s old lady flapping her gums at the sit down dinner for 1200, I was at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens where the Madison Social Justice Center was celebrating its fourth birthday. Bob Kimbrough, my old undergrad Shakespeare teacher, University faculty and staff labor organizer, literary genius, socialist and comrade received the legacy award. I sat with friends David and Barbara Houghton, and Gene and Linda Farley.

At the next table sat Vicki Elkin, now of Gathering Waters and earlier the key staffer on our township’s Land Trust Commission, her husband writer Mike Ivey, Midge Miller, Dunn Planning Commission chair Steve Grebs and his partner Julie Andersen (another honoree at the event).

Julie Andersen and Kabzuag Vaj received Visionary Awards, Julie for her peace activism and Vaj for her work against domestic violence. Julie’s acceptance speech included that quote from Marianne Wilson (or Nelson Mandela?)…

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world…. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

…and the winnah wuz!!!

Leslie Winer! For her email submission: Molly Bloom.

how about molly bloom, seriously though.
my dog’s name is gracie
she came named.
my second to last daughter’s name is maeve
which is why i was pushing it so hard; )
queenie’s good, no?
this is sort of like thinking about band names
you just can’t stop.
thanks a lot,
leslie

Dozens of people contributed canine cognomens, some funny, some serious. I liked Peter Hoff’s Paynterly submissions:

Vincent Van Dogh (Vince or Van for short)
Muttisse (though it looks too cute and well bred for that)
Leonardo DogVinci (Leo or, again, Vince)
Rowphael
Jacques Dogvide (Jock)

Dervala’s submissions were all Irish. She opined:

I think my role here is to supply some Irish girls’ names:

Sinead
Biddy ( http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/people/biddy.htm )
Afria (my middle name–super-Gaelic, but too full of breathy vowels)
Orla (okay, more breathy vowels.)
Colleen (which isn’t a girl’s name, it just means ‘girl’. We spell it cailin.)

Or one of the best Irish placenames ever: Dingle.
http://www.dingle-peninsula.ie/

I would, of course, be honored to think of a Patrick’s Day pup called Dervla running around ;-) Though I think I’d name my own dog Halley.

I had asked, “What would be a good name for something this tail-less and furry?” and Doc Searls replied,

I agree. Name the dog “What.”

I’m not kidding.

Think about it.

I’m still thinking about it… say what? Ken camp suggested that a Sandhill pup should be named Dune, and my son ben agreed. He said, “dune’s a boss suggestion. it’s got both wit and that late early 90s Mad Max bad boy appeal. some dog named dune would grow up to dominate.” Sometimes I need a translator to talk with my own kids.

Dean thought that since it has no tail it might be called Darwin. Gary, also working on the tail-less notion suggested “Integral.” Cheyenne had several suggestions, among them Biggles and Banjo, both good names for something so wiggly and cute. Halley liked Cutie Pie, (while I was pondering naming her Halley). Jeneane’s entry, “poopalloverthefloor,” while accurate and realistic lacked the musical ring and allusive Irish quality of the winner. You had to be there to understand Chris Pirillo’s suggestion, “NotMe.”

Thanks to everyone else who submitted names, Yule, Kevin, Catherine, Maggie, Henry, Adriana, Stu, Meg, Shelley, Susan, Michael, JR, Wendy, Elaine, Dan, Brian, Bill, and Niek. I thought about getting lots of puppies so I could use all those great names, but Beth sort of folded her arms and tapped her foot on that one. She’s the only person I know who can hold that pose while convincingly nodding an affirmation and at the same time saying simply “no.”
