I lost my voice

May 12, 2008

I lost my voice. Nobody can hear me. Even when I think I’m screaming, nobody hears me. Results of the Milgram experiment indicate that I shouldn’t be surprised. I might as well blame Hannah Arendt for her assessment of Eichmann as a regular Joe, and for the license conveyed by her phrase “the banality of evil.” While Abu Ghraib may be an atrocity and a war crime, the bombardment of Iraq and the destruction of Iraqi water purification systems during the decade preceding the second Iraq war were a Crime Against Humanity.

But what the hell? We’re all just good Germans. We’re all just following orders. There’s a war on. These things happen as part of a foreign policy that we can’t control. Certainly Rumsfeld and Bush can’t be held responsible for the savagery of a few bad apples tormenting prisoners far from these shores.
