Attribution…

It’s been pointed out to me that William Gibson actually said the thing about the “future is already here, it’s just not well distributed yet.” I thought it was Bruce Sterling. Wonder if someone can point me to the Gibson source-age?

It’s funny to find this post, I was just Googling for the source myself, after running across the line in a speech from 1998 by… Bruce Sterling.

Of course, they’re pals, so maybe Bruce was quoting Bill.

    Dunno.

There are at least two versions of the quote, one with “evenly” and another with “widely,” and your version, “well.”

Gibson said the line or something close to it in a 1999 interview on NPR, but he was repeating himself. I find it interesting that Sterling isn’t mentioned in that discussion nor the Usenet thread linked therein.
