Yesterday I listened to a conference call.  There was a “backchannel” IRC chat in progress as counterpoint to the call but I couldn’t participate.  My PC was behind a firewall that doesn’t allow IRC communications. A celebrity guest was very active on the IRC and his comments there were referenced by the speakers.   Eventually he was called forward to speak and those of us who were crippled by the lack of an IRC backchannel were able to hear what he had to say.

This was an hour call, but after the first half hour I had to disconnect to attend a face-to-face meeting.  My internal task-switcher didn’t function so well.  During the first several minutes of the face-to-face I was preoccupied with my dissatisfaction  stemming from the conference call.

It’s my hope to catch up with one or another of the participants this week to find out if I missed anything.  One of these people suggested I Skype her.  My home office AT&T DSL has proven unfriendly to Skype, so that won’t work unless I can trouble-shoot and resolve whatever problem causes Skype to flutter here on my end.  Eventually I need to resolve that problem, but the time I have available probably won’t work to bring the online tool to bear on the communication problem that I’m trying to address.

Anyone have a couple of soup cans and a long string they can lend me?

Frank, maybe Jason Z knows something that would work for you. He’s got a post on something called “FreeConference”.
