Martin Kaplan - In Memoriam

“And yet we are faced with war, poverty, increasing disorder and social
alienation, distorted priorities, declining freedom and individual
powerlessness. These are products not of man’s inherent evil

but of the inexorable grinding of the national machines with their
imperatives of growth, profit, and glory.”

Martin Kaplan

Amy, my sympathy on the death of your uncle Martin, yet how proud you must be of him, his warmth, and his accomplishments.  May you also live to a nice old age, help set the stage for someone to earn a Nobel Peace Prize and perhaps learn to play the cello.

Rachel MacNair: It’s the PITS

Ben Paynter writes about a difficult subject today: Rachel MacNair, an expert on PTSD, an anti-abortion advocate and a peace activist. MacNair has a theory about PTSD that cuts to the heart of the malady. She calls it PITS, Perpetration Induced Traumatic Stress. Sounds like a complicated way to describe a guilt trip, but read Ben’s article, there’s a lot of food for thought.

Sorry Dean…

The BoSox must have had that strategic injection of BoTox, and I’m glad. I’m a Yankee fan by nature. I back a winner. I remember when the Boston National League franchise moved to Milwaukee, and I remember those glory days of the Milwaukee Braves. Baseball ended for me when they moved to Atlanta. No problem, my pro sports interest had shifted to the Green Bay Packers. That faded when they invented something called a superbowl and made the pro teams play-off against the AFL for some dubious award. Naturally the Packers won those.

I moved to San Francisco and every year or so there would be an Oakland world series win or an Oakland superbowl win, then the Raiders became the traitors and moved to LA, but again, no problemo — toward the end of January we’d leave the office and watch the Niners do a superbowl victory parade. Ho-hum…

Last night baseball history was made and this jaded non-fan turned on the local broadcast station and watched a few pitches.

It remains for the Cards to beat the Bush league team and we’ll have a good old fashioned world series again!

Two Magicians…

There’s a man with an infinity symbol over his head where one might expect a halo. In a self referential posting spiraling inward like perhaps the DNA of a common oyster drill suspended in a vat of Owsley’s best, Chris Locke today pulls a passage from The Bombast Transcripts wherein it is noticed by the waitress that he has two magicians. Here from another source we get an inkling of what this portends:

The Magician’s lessons have to do with the ability to innovate, to create and to use the will in order to make things happen. Magician people are often extraordinarily gifted communicators, and have the ability to be a channel for the manifestation of Divine will. They are innovators, leaders, teachers, and healers. If you have the Magician in your Tarot profile, you can be extremely focused, and you need to take care not to be impatient with others. Not everyone identifies so personally with their work the way that Magicians do, and this may make you especially vulnerable to criticism. You have the ability, however, to transform the ordinary into the sublime, and if you make sure you do not scatter your considerable energies, you may well find yourself in the esteemed company of others with our profile, such as George Washington, Sir Isaac Newton, Walt Whitman, Florence Nightingale, Susan B. Anthony, Ernest Hemingway, Napoleon, Carl Sagan, Janis Joplin and many others.

There’s an open road, the stars are out, the mountains are dark in the distance… turn on your High Beams.

Crimes of Fashion

Pippa’s tinfoil head-gear is exactly what the well dressed young person needs to keep the aliens from spying on his or her innermost thoughts and feelings.

Holding Tom in the Light

Still no word from Tom Matrullo. I’m holding him in the light tonight, praying that he and his family are safe from the storm and will emerge in good health.
