The Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl happens on New Years Day.  There is never rain on the Rose Parade because it happens on New Years Day in Pasadena.  The Big Ten champion and the Pac Ten champion compete in the Rose Bowl.  Not Texas.

Anything that purports to be a college football national championship isn’t.  College teams are not farm clubs for the pros.  College ball should not have corporate sponsorship, period.  The Willys Jeep Mongoose Bowl may be an exception.  Also the Studebaker Ferret Bowl.  But that’s that.

It’s come to this.  Football is soccer, and padded American pointy ball chasing must end.  Perhaps we could take up rugby.

Finally something relevant from you, fp!

Since adpoting this national championship game every other Bowl game has been diminished. It is the removal of any sort of dynamic, complexity, nuance that’s at work here.

Who’s number one. God, of course we couldn’t accept it any other way. Let’s get straight to the money shot. Sport. Music. Film.

Who’s number one. Look at the numbers.

And it’s the corporate template that’s the problem. Results-driven. End of story.

It’s not even a matter of winners and losers. Losers don’t exist. Aren’t even acknowledged. There’s no room for ‘we’re number two, but we try harder’. Triumphalism rules.

Exactly Brian. The Univ. of Wisconsin coach retires this year after a strong fifteen years of developing winning teams. To do this, he scheduled games with the Red Caboose nursery school if he had to. This year the team rewarded him with a victory in his last game as coach, a victory in the Capital One bowl, whatever that was.
