Rebecca MacKinnon on Newsweek’s Sloppiness

Traci Carpenter at Newsweek interviewed Rebecca MacKinnon about the complicity of U.S. technology companies in Chinese internet censorship.   Pretty good article I thought.   Rebecca takes issue with Newsweek’s sloppiness though.  And she’s right.  Somewhere there’s an editor who should have paid more attention to Traci when she provided the background for this piece.

Traci’s fresh out of college and I hope she’s developing the callouses necessary to survive being bitch-slapped by bloggers and her colleagues alike.  As for Newsweek, well they’re in a head to head battle with Time aren’t they?  And I’m yawning over here.

So, MacKinnon is screaming at some intern cause they got her title wrong? I saw a correction on the site, so I just don’t understand what the big deal is. They didn’t get enough of her titles in? Is she a professor or something? The article seemed pretty good, though it’s hardly groundbreaking. That stuff about the registration of sites is a month old.
