The escalator ride seemed like a good idea at the time, but obviously I should have ridden it down first and then done the long dolly out at the end. Oh well. Busby Berkeley, I ain’t, but I’m pretty good on the rattle.

The drum circle was constantly changing. This crowd is smaller than some, and this was the last afternoon of the convention so the Orange County Convention Center had already started to clear out.

Alice Walker’s Open Letter to Barack Obama http://listics.com/200811124529 http://listics.com/200811124529#comments Wed, 12 Nov 2024 15:58:17 +0000 Frank Paynter http://listics.com/?p=4529 In Alice Walker’s open letter to Barack Obama on the day following the election, she says:

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate. One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.

Cognitive Surplus… http://listics.com/200805044055 http://listics.com/200805044055#comments Mon, 05 May 2024 03:26:12 +0000 Frank Paynter http://listics.com/200805044055 Alan Herrell posts Clay Shirky’s recent O’Reilly Web 2.0 talk at Raving Lunacy. It’s an eye-opener for anybody who is the least bit of a cliometrician. He posits that millions of brain dead hours we’ve spent on the couch staring into the TV set have begun to be converted to something new, something shared, something constructive.

What dazzled me is that Shirky is done flogging his recent book “Here Comes Everybody,” and has moved on to share other insights. I heard him last month at Isen.com’s Freedom to Connect. Heath Row live blogged that talk with the accuracy of a court reporter.

In this election season, it’s great to hear a public speaker who isn’t simply delivering schtick.
