I’m a born-and-raised American (47 yrs, CA) living in Germany (>20 yrs) – and you are so right when people refer to “my” country as socialist or even communist without having a clue on what that means. We are NEITHER – the health care system included. We indeed have social components throughout the systems, one of the many reasons why I choose to live in Germany over the US. We have free choice as to where we want to be health insured (private or public), with govt restrictions that apply to all (non-profit) companies. Everyone is insured – or you get a bill after treatment. And that feels good in itself.
