I'm at Gnomedex right now, watching DW up on the stage. He IS indeed a controlling personality. I've long thought he's working out his personal conflicts in public .. he's got a link to an article he wrote titled Monoculture: An artificat of the 20th century, and he's always on about users, decentralization, distributed this and that .. and of course he has done so very much to make that happen. AND, I think that is truly how we want to "BE" in the world, and continues to struggle towards trying to convince everyone he is so, when his basic personality mitigates against that .... Watching him move through the world, at conferences like this and on his blog, is (for me) like watching him have an argument with himself in public, aided and abetted by body language and and impulse-driven social skills. What a relief to read some of the stuff I've been thinking about conferences for a long time. Well done, Frank. There is some excellent takeaway - uh, learning - in this piece. Whew! I find the whole event fascinating and I would have dearly loved to attend but I know that I would have lost control at several points. All i would have to do was be linked to "McD" and it would have gotten interesting because I'm primed for conflict with Dave Winer, and Mike Arrington but I have tremendous respect for many that attended. As always, your writing is particularly observant, balanced and prudent. WWFD? Find the key learning in the experience and share that freely. Frank,
