Unchained Melody

Ronni Bennett blogs at Time Goes By.  Her clear true voice alone compels affection, and the dimple on her chin - well… I know what I like.

One of the things I like is the balance in her perspective.  She draws on personal adult experience from before the dawn of modern feminism through today to soften the often harsh and often adversarial discussion of sex role issues.  I am certainly no limp minded incrementalist when it comes to the struggle for equality for the disadvantaged.  Neither, I am sure, is Ronni.  yet there is something powerful that I agree with in her observation:

Women have jobs now that were unthinkable in my youth: doctor, lawyer,

corporate chief. They fly airplanes, drive 18-wheelers and go to war.
If we are paid only 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, we have
still made great progress. A revolution happened within the span of my
adult lifetime and women will catch up with men’s salaries - to change
the attitudes of the entire history of mankind takes time; it’s been
only 40 years.

Well, as I commented over at Ronni’s, while some see the gender equality glass as half empty and some see it as half full, the reality is, it’s still half a glass. We’ve still got a long way to go, and not pushing forward will result in our standing still — maybe even sliding back a little. And, as you know, I’m a pushy broad anyway.
